Résumé / Abstract

Caramelo, beyond its Mexicans’ constant border crossings between Mexico and the United States of America, represents the daily experience and symbol of millions of people who leave their homes and cross borders legally or illegally all over the world. The border as a transitional space for consciousness of people’s identity for both Mexicans and Americans in the author’s rewriting of the two countries’ history. It includes the notion of integration in the context of liberalism which may lead to tolerance, globalization or integration (crosscultural identity) made difficult by the need to challenge the deeply rooted patriarchal values of both Mexican and American cultures.
